Fix Australia’s broken HECS system!

Petition to: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Education Minister Jason Clare

Fix Australia’s broken HECS system!

The government’s proposed loan reforms may look promising on the surface, but they leave countless Australians trapped in financial hardship. Raising the income threshold and cutting debts by 20% won’t fix a system that continues to favor the wealthy while crushing everyday Australians with decades of debt.

The reality is alarming.

  • 60% of students are drowning in financial stress because of their student loans.
  • The average HECS debt is now over $27,000, with many staring down years of repayments.
  • 45% of Australians believe the system is rigged for high-income earners, leaving the rest to shoulder an unfair burden.

These changes will let high-income earners reap the rewards while struggling Australians are left behind—paying more, for longer.

We demand that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Education Minister Jason Clare:

  • Reassess the proposal to ensure it’s truly fair for all.
  • Deliver real relief for current students and justice for those who have already repaid.
  • Commit to transparency so every borrower knows how these changes will impact them.

We aim to gather 5,000 signatures by July 31, 2024 to push for a fair, just education system that doesn’t trap Australians in endless debt.

Sign now to demand a student loan system that stands for all Australians.
