Australia: Rethink Australia Day for a fairer future

Petition to: Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister of Australia

Australia: Rethink Australia Day for a fairer future
  • January 26 marks the beginning of colonisation for First Nations peoples, a date tied to loss, trauma, and historical injustice.
  • Recent polls show 69% of Australians support keeping the date, but this fails to address its divisive impact.
  • A growing number of Australians believe the day should foster unity and inclusivity, not division.
  • Calls for alternative dates reflect a need to celebrate national achievements while respecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Australia Day should unite, not divide. While January 26 holds meaning for many, it is also a reminder of deep pain for First Nations peoples, representing the start of colonisation and centuries of injustice.

Reconsidering the date is an opportunity to build a more inclusive Australia. By choosing a day that celebrates our achievements while respecting the past, we can create a national day that everyone feels proud to honor.

We call on the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, to:

  1. Engage in dialogue to explore alternative dates that unite all Australians.
  2. Support educational initiatives that reflect our full history, including First Nations perspectives.
  3. Celebrate diversity through inclusive national events that acknowledge the resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We need 5,000 signatures before January 26. Let’s reflect on our past, respect our differences, and celebrate a future built on unity.

Sign the petition to support a fairer, more inclusive Australia Day.
