As rent prices hit a record high, hordes of struggling Aussies are set to be left behind thanks to the latest budget.

Rental affordability in Australia is as bad as it has ever been, with Australian capital city rents up 13% over the year.

Australia has recorded its lowest ever amount of affordable rentals across the country, and this unaffordability is not just impacting those on low incomes, but middle-income earners as well.

A new analysis reveals that renters in Australia’s capital cities would have saved $3.8 billion over the 12 months to March if rents had been frozen.

The government has the ability to implement a freeze on rents; they’re simply opting against it. By allowing unrestricted rent hikes, they’re inadvertently exacerbating housing stress and contributing to the rise in homelessness among renters.

We’re demanding that Julie Collins MP, Minister for Housing, takes immediate action to discuss an Australia-wide rent freeze and cap further rent increases with the government to combat the cost of living crisis and support the two-thirds of Aussie renters experiencing rental stress.

We cannot continue to allow the housing crisis to worsen, and it is up to us to demand action for fair and affordable housing for all Australians.
