Every two minutes, an expanse of our invaluable forests and bushland equivalent to the size of an MCG stadium is annihilated, tearing apart the homes of numerous cherished wildlife species. The relentless assault on biodiversity is unfolding before our eyes, positioning Australia as the second-highest contributor to the global extinction crisis.
According to recent data from Greenpeace, a staggering 2.2 million hectares of forest and bushland were razed to the ground in Queensland over a mere five-year period. Shockingly, of this vast expanse, 2.1 million hectares were habitats officially designated as critical for threatened species by federal authorities. Among these, over 730,000 hectares were identified as vital endangered koala habitat.
The consequences of deforestation are dire. It leads to habitat loss for countless species of plants and animals, pushing many to the brink of extinction. Our iconic koalas, kangaroos, and countless other species are losing their homes and facing increased threats to their survival.
Moreover, deforestation disrupts water cycles, exacerbating droughts and soil erosion, and threatens Indigenous communities whose livelihoods and cultural heritage are deeply connected to the land.
We cannot stand idly by and watch as our forests vanish. It’s time to take a stand and demand action from our government to protect and conserve Australia’s forests.
